Abstract

Sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia is a series of premature ectopic ventricular depolarizations of the same morphology, with frequency greater than 180 per minute and duration longer than 30 seconds. We describe the case of a nine-year-old neutered male English bulldog who was admitted to the Internal Medicine Clinic of the University Veterinary Hospital in respiratory distress. A diagnosis of persistent monomorphic ventricular tachycardia was established by clinical work-up. After an unsuccessful attempt of conversion into sinus rhythm with lidocaine, this was achieved with the short-acting blocker of beta-1 adrenergic receptors, esmolol. One month after the conversion, the patient was stable.
