Abstract

The symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders are
one of the main problems for which dog owners
take their dogs to the vet. Chronic gastrointestinal
problems require a comprehensive diagnosis, complemented
by specific treatment. Cobalamin and
folate are functional biomarkers of gastrointestinal
permeability and absorption function. Fluctuations
in serum cobalamin and folate concentrations may
indicate localization on the basis of their absorption
in different parts of the intestine (cobalamin is absorbed
in the distal small intestine and folate in the
proximal small intestine) and help in the diagnosis
of a specific intestinal disease. There is a correlation
between changes in serum cobalamin and folate
concentrations and Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency
(EPI), Antibiotic-Responsive Enteropathy (ARE), Immunosuppressive-
Responsive Enteropathy (IRE) and
lymphoma. Decreased serum cobalamin and albumin
concentrations in chronic gastrointestinal diseases
are a negative prognostic indicator.
