Abstract

It is unknown to a wider readership that the German lawyer and byzantinist Karl Eduard Zachariä [von Lingenthal] wrote two travelogues that were the result of his travels in Greece. The two trips had a time difference of forty years. This makes us expect a fruitful research ground for the investigation of the possible change and the transformation of the image of Athens, since Athens was the symbolic place of European imagination. In addition, we will deal with aspects of female writing, especially in the second book.
