KLOVIĆ'S ANNIVERSARIES MANY WAYS IN WHICH WE HAVE PAID OUR DEBTS TO THE GREAT MINIATURIST KLOVIĆ (Grižane 1498 – Rome 1578)
Ivan Barbarić
Abstract
The 400th death anniversary and 500th birth anniversary of Juraj Julije Klović have been solemnly celebrated in his native Grižane, as well as in Zagreb. That was also the occasion for scientific conferences on life and art oeuvre of this world-renown miniaturist. Much was written about him at the time, however, here we shall mention only the most important works, these being the monographs connected to Klović's jubilees: Julije Klović by Maria Cionini Visani (1977) and The Count of Miniature - Juraj Julije Klović Croata by Ivan Barbarić (2000). Grižane also became the place of permanent exhibition, serving as a foundation for future Klović Museum (2007). A memorial plaque was uncovered at the Pauline Monastery in Crikvenica, as a memory of a fact that it was here, with Pauline monks, that Klović acquired general education along with the first lectures in painting. By doing all of this we have, in a way, repaid our debts to the great Croatian artist who never forgot his homeland nor his origin.
