Abstract

The advent of combination antiretroviral therapy (CART) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has led to improvements in both quality of life and life expectancy for HIV-infected patients. The most prominent side effect of CART is lipodystrophy, a syndrome which is characterized by loss of fat (or lipoatrophy) in the face and limbs and increased fat (or lipohypertrophy) in intraabdominal, dorsocervical and breast areas. Diagnostic methods in use are: ultrasound, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and trodimensional laser scan. The goal of those methods is objective and early assessment of fat distribution, before it is clinically apparent. They help clinicians to make decision about changing therapy. At the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases »Dr. Fran Mihaljević« in Zagreb, the ultrasound method is in routine use since 2006. This method is not expensive, it's readily accessible and possesses essentially no risk of ionizing radiation to the patient.
