Abstract

As Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, the author of the paper made a state visit to Lithuania, and on this occasion visited the University of Vilnius. There he met students of Croatian studies and their teachers, among whom was the head of the Croatian language course, Professor Sergeius Temčinas, and the Croatian language lector, Robert Bebek. In honour of the Prime Minister and the Croatian mission, the students put on an exhibition of the works of Marulić held in the libraries of Vilnius, and made the surprise gift of a translation of the first two cantos of Judita in Lithuanian (this translation is being published in the present Colloquia Maruliana). The translation of the entire text is expected to be completed and published in 2006.
Further, the author gives details of eight editions of Marulić’s works of the16th and 17th centuries (nine copies in all) that are kept in three libraries in Vilnius, additional witness to the extent to which the Croatian writer was read in the north of Europe. To mutual satisfaction, it was agreed that the Government of the Republic of Croatia would send a bust of Marko Marulić (the work of the sculptor Vasko Lipovac), to be put up in Vilnius University.
