Abstract

In the fi rst part of the paper the theoretical aspects of the relationship
between modernization and territorial affiliation are discussed.
The ever greater acceleration of modernization processes generated
by technological development is erasing the ties between
individuals and territory which is particularly manifested in the process
of "globalization". Deterritorialization of social affiliation and
identity enhances mobilizational processes on opposite bases. The
affirmation of subnational - regional and local - identities is taking
place in a new social, cultural and political environment, bringing
about new forms of territorial affiliation. The second part of the
paper presents the results of research of regional mobilization in
Istria. The author's attention is focused on the basic dimensions of
regional affiliation. The research results indicate greater territorial
ties on a regional level, but this does not imply the spreading of
radical forms of regionalism. As far as structural features of regionalism
in Istria are concerned, the research indicates a layered
and complex phenomenon, in which traditional and modern elements
have intertwined and become inseparable.
