Abstract

The order Diptera (Diptera) is one of the most species-rich insect orders. The most well-known are harmful species such as fruit flies, leaf miners, gall midges and other species that damage agricultural crops. However, there are also many species whose larvae are carnivorous predators, parasites and parasitoids that attack and feed on other organisms. Their most common hosts are other insects, but they also attack snails, earthworms, millipedes and spiders. The best-known beneficial species of Diptera belong to the families Syrphidae (hoverflies), Tachinidae (tachinid flies), Cecidomyiidae (gall midges) and Dolichopodidae (long-legged flies). Some of them are also available as commercial products used in biological pest control. This paper reviews the relevant scientific literature to describe natural enemies
of the order Diptera that are important predators, parasites or parasitoids of various insect pests in agriculture.
