Abstract

Work-related diseases are of a multifactorial character,
in which the workplace has a dynamic role in their causality,
and they affect all aspects of the health-related
quality of life of the economically active individual and
their family. The dynamic approach to assessing the
occurrence of work-related diseases involves several
interdependent domains such as the assessment of
physical and psychosocial risk factors in the workplace,
individual characteristics of the economically active
individual, and the local and wider social environment
where the workplace is situated. Through the interdisciplinary
model of collaboration with health and nonhealth
professionals, physiotherapists play an innovative
role in the promotion of health in the workplace, as
well as in the prevention of work-related diseases.
The International Classification of Functioning, Disability
and Health enables physiotherapists to early recognise
the factors that contribute to the development of
work-related diseases through the assessment of the
domains of body functions and structures, activities
and participation, as well as personal factors and workplace-
related factors, in addition to social determinants
of health such as the level of education, economic stability,
social involvement and access to healthcare. The
implementation of the concepts that promote health in
the workplace enables physiotherapists to ensure the
development and integration of screening programs
aimed at early recognition and prevention of risk factors
for work-related diseases. Along with the stated,
the integration of individually adapted multimodal
physiotherapy program which involves individualised
ergonomics, ensures dedication in the prognosis and
treatment of work-related disease, while the workplace
physical activity programs encourages the adoption of
healthy lifestyle habits, accompanied by the implementation
of strategies for managing workplace load.
