Abstract

This work deals with names of the fish in Jezera on the island of Murter. Among 138 recorded names, there is a whole series of those of Romanic origin (arbun, fratar, kavalo, lacerna, mezoluno, palamita, srdela, špar, ušata). Among authentic Croatian names we can find widely spread ichthyologic names like kovač, zubatac, ovčica, list, golub, pauk, modrulj, but also autochthonous and sometimes very peculiar names such as kljuna, žgulja, gornja baba, pas volonja, očalinka, svirac, lulavi Šime etc. For naming fish, the people also used zoological names (pas, mačka, slipi miš, morski tovar, konj, pas, prasac, lisica, volina) as well as ornithological names (kokot, pivac, sovica, vranjak). The fish were also named according to their primary color (bilota, crnjul, crvendač, modrak, plavica, šarulja, žutica), or according to everyday items whose shape resembled specific fish (bat, jagla, jaglun, kaiš, miš, mač, mlat, sabljaš, škaran).
