Abstract

The experience ensuing from seventy years of socialism in
countries of Central and Eastern Europe has shown all the inability
to organize an efficient economy and democratic social system
based on state or social ownership. After the collapse of the
socialist economic system, the ex-socialist countries have been
searching for ways and modes of establishing an economy
founded upon free market, free enterprise and private ownership.
This work gives a survey of the possible paths and experiences
of privatization in the economies of Central and Eastern Europe.
Privatization, as an important part of the economic and broader
social restructuration of post-communist societies, will earmark
the nineties. Why privatize? Which models of privatization are
known to us? How and at which pace should privatization be
conducted? What are the limits and how should they be dealt with?
These are the questions analyzed in this work. Presented are also
different approaches to privatization and an analysis of their
positive and negative characteristics, always from the point of view
of achieving greater economic efficiency of the whole system. The
authors conclusion is that a very complex socio-economic
transformation is at stake, which is difficult but nevertheless
possible to manage.
