Abstract
The paper examines and applies system approach in analysis of
spatial and economic aspects of island development. Islands are
viewed as separate systems and as parts of larger regional
(coast-island) systems which leads to recognition of specificities
of island existence and island development paradigm. The
elements of the paradigm are: 1) complex structure of island
economy, 2) agriculture as a necessary part of the island economic
structure, 3) determined relations between economic
development and population growth, 4) population growth
stimulation as a measure against abrupt, forced immigration and
5) nadal principle in organization of economic and social
functions. In accordance with the paradigm revitalisation of
decayed islands has to be gradual. Development policy hasto be
geared towards sustainable island development
