Abstract

Enumerating, analysing and interpreting theatrical, dance and musical performances such
as pantomime, stories, ballads and songs, puppet theatre and processions, the author
points to the ideological clash between the two big religions of the Mediterranean. On
Sicily, this clash results in the negative perception of the Saracen heritage. Various
performances that picture the relationship between the Moors and the Christians on Sicily
are reduced to the division according to the topic of the armed conflict and according to the
topics of the transfiguration and wedding. The author uses the historical and
anthropological arguments to discuss and supports the symbolic bipolarity in which the
fighting principle and the negative energy of the conflict are functionally placed in the
relationship with the erotic-nuptial principle and the positive energy of love and fertility
within the numerous ceremonial contexts.
