Abstract

The first part of the paper deals with the approach to formulating a
strategy of integrated and sustainable rural development in Slovenia.
The author presents an overview of relevant endeavours in the field
of science, research and education, and defines the role of the state
in stimulating rural development stressing The Programme of rural
development for the Republic of Slovenia 2004-2006, which pays
special attention to less favoured areas. Then, the author presents
her own approach to formulating a strategy of integrated and sustainable development of rural communities composed of the following steps: appointing a relevant state committee, formulating
strategy, identifying the mechanisms of its implementation, implementation of the strategy and monitoring its results. Second
part of the paper argues the necessity of integration of (farm) women
into the strategy of rural development on the basis of relevant documents of the EU and of the Republic of Slovenia pointing out the need for equality of women in economic and social development of
rural communities. The overview of actions (conferences, research projects, attempts to formulate relevant strategy) taking place in
Slovenia, shows that a lot has been done in the field of promoting
gender equality in agriculture and in the countryside but the author
argues that the easiest way to put normative gender equality into
practice is considering (farm) women as an indispensable component
of projects/programmes of integrated and sustainable development of
rural communities.
