Abstract

In the first part the author theoretically situates the phenomenon of
leisure-time in a traditional pre-industrial and rural environment of
industrial civilization showing how and in which issues the changes occur compared to traditional peasant's life where the day's time is
one whole. This part of analyses proves the author's exceptional
knowledge of the literature as well as of the phenomenon he is researching which is best reflected in analytically founded reasoning
of the rhythm of work, family obligations, festivities and leisure-time
relative to the season of the year, production cycles, weather conditions and the available labour force and one's own rhythm of
work, which always in some tiny nuance differs from that of the neighbour or the whole rural community. Working time and leisure-time are interwoven and it is only environmental features and
biological needs that impose certain boundaries, since the peasant's
productive work can't be separated from his life as whole. In the
subsequent text the author gives dear and particularly interesting
account of transformation of contents of festivities, season's and daily
leisure, the impact of productional and cultural factors on traditional
range and contents of leisure, and the institutions of traditional leisure-time in the village. In the part of the work dealing with the urbanization of leisure-time in rural environment - founded upon the
results of his own research in social life and entertainment in some
fifty villages - the author directed a particular attention to changes in
regard to the degree of village's development (developed, medium developed and undeveloped), respondents' sex and age, and social
heterogenization and leisure-time heterogenization in villages in Yugoslavia in early 1960's. The author's analysis of position of women, peasant-workers, appearance of pensioners is exemplary
for his social sensitiveness and it affirms his position of engaged intellectual-scientist.
