Abstract

This research investigates the developmental changes in perceptual-constructional functions. The aim of this study was to examine age differences on Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCFT). 270 children between the ages of 7 and 13 were tested. The standardized scoring system comprising three criteria (unit scoring, procedural types and time) was used to assess the childrens performance. The results show that there are significant differences between the age groups in perceptual-constructional abilities of children on all measures of performance: the frequency of better organized types increases with age, the number of correct units also increases, while the time needed for task completion shortens. Sex differences were also examined, showing the significant effect of this variable on some aspects of performance. The results are discussed in terms of recent findings on developmental changes of the central nervous system and the impact of those changes on the improvement of performance on perceptual-constructional tasks.
