What is commitment and how can we measure it?

Darja Maslić Seršić

Abstract

In the introduction, recent definitions and operationalizations of commitment are reported. Also, development and the status of the concept in the last few decades are analyzed. Affective, instrumental and normative commitment scales (Meyer et al., 1993) are applied on the sample of 766 professionals from 21 industrial organizations. The reliability (e.g. internal consistency), convergent and discriminate validity of the scales are discussed. Descriptive data are compared to the same results obtained on American and non-American employees. It is concluded that the three-component model of commitment, developed by American psychologists Meyer and Allen, is a good starting point for theoretical, as well as for applied research in our culture. Translated scales needed to be somewhat modified.
