Abstract
Depression is a relatively frequent companion to a stroke and it affects the recovery process a great deal. The depressive disorder is also an independent risk factor for stroke emergence and it is intervened by a series of biological, behavioural and psychological factors. The particularity of lesion site is of great importance for depression development on stroke as well as stroke intensity and other factors that are defined by patient’s sex, age, early psychiatric case history and unfavourable social circumstances. An untreated depression enhances a mortality rate by stroke and it also enhances the quantity of therapeutical treatments and medical expenses in the whole. Early depression treatment already within a month from the stroke diminishes functional damages considerably and improves recovery. In the course of the treatment it is necessary to pay attention to the intensity of both disorders as well as to the appropriate choice of anti-depressants. The correction of the living habits is of no less importance together with a sociotherapeutic support to a patient and his family members.
