Contribution of personality factors and self concept clarity to the explanation of self-handicapping behavior
Josip Burušić
Abstract
Self-handicapping presents one of the self-protective strategies to preserve one's self-esteem and/or public image. As a construct, it involves a number of specific behaviors, which involve purposefully invoking an obstacle to success thus lowering the probability of achieving success. In the present study, third year secondary school students (N=373) were assessed for individual differences in self-handicapping, Big Five personality dimensions and self-concept clarity. Neuroticism, introversion and a lower level self-concept clarity were strongly related to self-handicapping and significantly contributed to an explanation of this kind of behavior.
