Abstract

Effects of modernization can be seen in changes in natural and cultural landscapes in Croatia. Human beings are not simply passive observers of these changes. Depending on whether emphasis is placed on the object of perception or on the subject who perceives the landscape, landscape assessment can be objective or subjective. This research deals with subjective assessment of six different types of landscapes: natural landscape (untouched nature) and five types of cultural landscapes – rural and urban dwelling, traditional and modern technological interventions (agriculture; wind turbines) and industrial landscape. The aim was to (1) research visual perception of different types of natural and cultural landscapes, (2) determine statistically significant preferences of the respondents for certain types of landscapes, (3) find whether the semantic differential instrument reveals four-dimensional factorial structure of subjective perception (aesthetics, stability, activity and religious), for all six types of landscapes, and (4) determine whether the factor structure is stable with regards to 15 bipolar adjectival pairs. Convenient sample was used (N=301; 2008) consisting of students from the Universities of Osijek, Split, Zadar and Zagreb. Univariate (means and percentages), bivariate (T-test) and multivariate statistical methods (principal component analysis under G-K criterion) were used in analysis.
