Abstract

Every child whose basic human needs – physical, emotional, social and spiritual - have not been fulfilled, is a child in danger. The UN Convention of the Rights of the Child has been adopted in order to protect children at risk and it can be applied to children throughout the world. The Convention itself can be interpreted from various aspects, and this article deals with the biblical attitude of pleading for justice, compassion and mercy. The Bible clearly states the principles social relations are based upon, and these are: all people have value in the eyes of God. Some Christian movements are not satisfied with the Convention because they deem that children have greater rights than their parents. However, when better studied, it is apparent that the Convention clearly affirms and strongly supports the family and its role in the development of the child. The acceptance of the Convention throughout the world broadens the possibilities of discussion and dialogue on exploitation, neglect and abuse of children in every aspect.
