POST-GRADUATE EDUCATION – A NECESSARY PREREQUISITE OF THE SOCIAL WORK DEVELOPMENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Abstract

A constituent part of the advancement of any scientific discipline is the development of graduated education that includes undergraduate and post-graduate scientific and professional university education. Contrary to North American and Central European countries, which have the tradition of graduated education in the social work sphere on the master’s and doctoral level, continued education in this area was not possible in our country up to now. Prerequisites for that were realised in March 2000 when the Ministry of Science and Technology included social activities area in the classification of scientific areas, which is in accordance with the practice of other developed countries. Since the proposal to establish a post-graduate course of study in the Social activities, branch Theory and Methodology of Social Work appeared for the first time at the University of Zagreb, this paper will briefly outline historical development of education in social work throughout the world and in our country, the contemporary determination of social work and scientific notions it is based on and basic developmental trends of post-graduate education in the social work sphere in the developed world.
