Abstract
The paper provides an overview of the situation and activities in selected countries regarding make work pay. Programmes of make work pay are mostly oriented towards stimulating financial incentives realised from work with regard to material rights from the social welfare and employment system. It also provides an overview of some important recent reform activities in the national social welfare systems and labour market programmes focused on the inclusion into the world of labour for the groups that mostly realise lower incomes, and are therefore not too interested in employment and active job search. These policies increase in-work incomes and thus improve work incentives for persons who are receiving only out-of-work incomes. The tax system also plays an important role – a tax base, exemptions and benefits, and marginal tax rates.
