UNESCO and the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict

Abstract

The paper examines the role of UNESCO in the creation, application and development of international legal rules and the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict. The main part of the analysis is related to UNESCO’s relation with the most important convention in this field: the1954 Hague Convention for the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict and its two protocols. The historical development of international legal rules concerning this problem is presented, as well as recent novelties relating to the international prosecution of crimes against cultural property and the possible actions which UNESCO can take has in this context. The relation between UNESCO and other international legal instruments and organizations in the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict is analyzed as well.
