Abstract

The paper analysis the process of media communication in democracy, with special emphasis on political communication. Different theoretical explanations about the relations of media and politics are discussed. Three important roles of media in political communication are underlined: informative role, acting as a corrective of the government, and mediator role. Politics makes decisions with consequences that are obligatory for the society, while the media acts as a mediator who informs the public about political decisions. Communication in modern society determines the functioning of democracy in that society. Without compatibility in communication between the society and political elite, without informed public and openness to public communication, there is no democratic society in the real sense of the word. Based on presented arguments, the hypothesis is confirmed that media and politics, regardless of the fact that they significantly influence one another, depend on each other in communication and they are in constant mutual interference.
