Abstract

We examined a total of 194 patients older than 18 years of age with chronic prostatitis, of whom 38 had chronic prostatitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. For each patient, the following data was obtained: patient history and severity of chronic prostatitis symptoms scored according to the Croatian version of questionnaire on chronic prostatitis symptoms (the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index - NIH-CPSI), clinical status including digitorectal prostatic examination, urethral swab specimens, selective urine samples and expressed prostatic secretions obtained by using the four-glass test (Meares-Stamey method). Chlamydia trachomatis was detected in urethral swab specimens and expressed prostatic secretions by DNA-RNA hybridization method. Patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis were treated with azithromycin orally in a total dose of 4,5 g for three weeks. Clinical cure correlated with bacteriological eradication (kappa >0.2<0.5).
