Abstract

The paper aims at analyzing passenger ships in domestic voyages as well as maritime accidents linked to passenger ships plying within the Croatian coastal area. Besides cruise ships, which mainly sail in international sea waters, there is a growing number of passenger ships used in domestic voyages. These are mainly excursion ships intended for one-day tours and smaller size cruise ships. The rising number of passenger ships and their concentration in certain sea areas considerably increases the possibility of accidents at sea. For the purpose of increasing passenger safety and transport service quality, the paper aims at analyzing the national passenger fleet, the types of accidents and the safety of passenger ships in general, thus determining the most frequent causes of these accidents. Based on the data obtained and in order to improve the safety of passenger ships, the most important conclusions reached and recommendations made are presented.
