Abstract

A ship operates under different loading conditions and with widely varying amounts of liquid in tanks. The transverse and longitudinal stability determination and DWT calculation depend on the obtained liquid amounts accuracy which varies due to both the systematic and the accidental errors. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid errors in determining the exact quantity of liquid in tanks. The ballast, fresh water and bilge water quantity in each tank and bilge are usually determined by the water level sounding or by the overflow through the air passage for full tanks. The paper aims at analyzing the influence of liquid reading error on ballast, fresh water and bilge water quantity, as well as its impact on the ship vertical center of gravity (VCG). The optical fiber technology, because of its advantages, has been suggested as a new option for liquid readings in tanks and bilges. The authors have proposed to install liquid level optical sensors into the forward and aft part of each tank.
