Abstract

This paper presents a wide spectrum of HPV infections of the cervix and the lower genital tract and their colposcopic aspects. It also provides the essential determinants of normal colposcopic fi ndings and the characteristics of colposcopic findings in HPV infections, including premalignant lesions of the cervix and the lower genital tract. The paper also shows the development of terminology in relation to the development of international classifi cations. As far as primary prevention is concerned, one should emphasize an adolescent friendly and structured sex education, which should combine illustrative examples from everyday life and adapted terminology with HPV vaccination of adolescent girls and in the near future, of adolescent boys as well. Consequently, the paper also
provides the most important guidelines of the Croatian Medical
Association for HPV prevention by the quadrivalent vaccine
against HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18.
