Abstract

The name d r u e s for a specific dance is relatively recent: it is found in written records from the fourth decade of this century. According to oral information, however, the appearance of the name is dated at the turn of the century. Extraordinary popularity of drmes, its wide distribution and great variety of its forms, suggest that the dance itself is older than its: contemporary name. In the second half of the nineteenth century existed a dance of similar choreographic features, under the name Croatian t a n a c. The author determines and compares the dance, space and style characteristics of both drmes and Croatian t a n a c, revealing their mutual similarities, as well as their common likeness to the Hungarian cardas.
