Abstract

Matija Petar Katančić’s manuscript Pridhodna Bilixenya od Dillorednog Zemlyomirja, which was written by the end of 1786 and at the beginning of 1787, is analysed in this paper. The manuscript is a Croatian translation of the first edition of a Latin geometry textbook, Elementa geometriae practicae, written by the Hungarian author Pál Makó. The complete geometric terminology has been extracted and then compared to geometric terminology collected from old Croatian dictionaries. As specialised terminology has greatly developed since the end of the eighteenth century, it is understandable that a part of the terminology suggested by Katančić has not been kept in contemporary use. Yet Katančić’s forming of geometric terminology presents an interesting model for today’s experts, who, considering the deluge of foreign words, might find among his suggestions some terms which could be useful today, as well.
