Abstract
This paper compares the prosody of the Davidias of Marko Marulić of Split (1450-1524) with that of the epic De vita et gestis Christi by Jakov Bunić of Dubrovnik (1469-1534). They contain different deviations from the classical standards, as they are called, in some words in common to both epics, and in those characteristic to just one; support for them is sought, whenever possible, in the poets of Late Antiquity or the Middle Ages, in contemporaries and in the classical poets. In such deviations numerous coincidences in the two epics as well as coincidences with the prosodies of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages are observed. Also discussed is the measure of the naturally short vowel in front of words that start with the clusters sp, st, sc, squ and the measure of the final –o in some words; in these measures considerable differences are observed, between the two works and between them and the works of ancient poets. Reference is made to certain prosodic irregularities not previously recorded in the literature concerning the prosody of these two epics and to some places in the Davidias that are of interest for both textual and prosodic reasons.
