Abstract

In this paper, the author lists people from the registers of births and marriages in the 17th, 18th, and the first half of the 19th century on the island of Silba whom the scribes had marked as foreigners. He categorizes these foreigners by the places from which they had come to Silba and by occupation. The registers list a number of places on the Adriatic coast and on the islands, as well as many overseas towns in modernday Italy and other, more distant countries: Spain, France, and Russia. There were skippers and ship-owners in the registers, along with many craftsmen, members of the clergy, physicians, and noblemen. On the basis of the data presented in the paper the author concludes that the development of the shipping trade on Silba in the 17th, 18th, and in the first half of the 19th century opened the door to many foreigners who were happy to visit, and came to stay on the island.
