Abstract
This text concerns the significance and repercussions of the new document on pornography recently issued by the Pontifical Commission for the Mass Media. The author places the problem in historical context and divides the spread of this evil into three phases. Pornography is particularly rampant in our time due to a general erosion in moral standards and the enormous power of the mass media, especially the press, television and video. Another factor is the absence or liberalization of legal regulations in this area, which contributes to pornography's becoming evermore pernicious and widespread. As emphasized in the document, the identification of the sources of pornography and measures to oppose the pomostructure are uregently required. Therefore, this document has particular significance from the pastoral standpoint.
