Psychological Causes of Identity Crisis

Abstract

In this experimental study, the author uses the free association method. He demonstrates that personal identitiy is a complex concept with intrapsychological, interpersonal, cognitive and autotranscendental elements. The author perceives a hierarchical distribution of the levels of identity, the stability of which depends upon the foundations of autodefinition. In conclusion, the author proposes a new definition for identity: autodefinition.
