Abstract

The author analyzes the artistic value of the Basilica of the Heart of Jesus in Zagreb, the construction of which commenced according to the plans of the architect J. Holjac in 1901. The outer part of the building exhibits elements of classical Jesuit basilica construction. A powerful spatial impression is achieved by the broad nave, characteristic of churches in late Historism. Various stylistic motifs are employed on the facade, unfortunately lacking organic unity, from high Renassance and 18th century baroque to Secession. Well known domestic and foreign (chiefly Austrian) masters worked on the basilica interior at the beginning of this century.
