Abstract
In the course of the psychic development of the child and of the adolescent almost necessarily emerge some critical situations, when the young person is more vulnerable and experiences and increased need for parental care and love. As for the early childhood three such critical situations are discussed: absence of the father, divorce and birth of a sibling. The child usually reacts to these stress-situations with depression and psychic regression. A prudent parental love includes here lots of understanding and tolerance. In adolescence the main problem is the struggle for self-identity and for independence. Parental love means here trust that allows a reasonable space for free choices to the adolescent. The article ends with an optimistic message: the human psyche possesses also innate correctives, that can assure normal development even in less favourable circumstances.
