Abstract

This paper is a summary of relevant theoretical approaches and research that appear in the examination of risky health behaviors. In this paper two major approaches are presented. The first one examines the relationship of personality traits and risky health behaviors, and the other one examines the mechanisms and processes underlying risky health behaviors. In the second approach two groups of models are presented; social cognition models (social cognitive theory, health belief model, protection motivation theory, theory of reasoned action, theory of planned behavior) and two stage models (a model of the precaution adoption process and transteoretical model). Additionally, The prototype/willingness model of risky health behavior is described. It represents a novelty compared to the previously mentioned models as it indicates the importance of social situations that may encourage an individual to risky acts.
