Abstract

Praxiten® (oxazepam) is one of the most known psychoactive medicinal products in Croatia. It acts by increasing the action of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid. The bioavailability of oxazepam is 65% to 85%. Its half-life is about 10 hours. Its onset of action is rather slow, unlike that of diazepam or flurazepam, which makes its addiction potential lower. Praxiten® is a very useful medicinal product for a number of patients suffering from anxiety and insomnia, as well as alcohol withdrawal symptoms. It is particularly useful in patients who do not require urgent and robust anxiolysis, and in elderly patients suffering from insomnia, especially those who have trouble staying asleep. Due to its short action, oxazepam is less likely than, for instance, diazepam to cause morning drowsiness. As oxazepam does not undergo hepatic oxidative biotransformation, it is probably a good choice in patients taking a large number of drugs or those with impaired benzodiazepine elimination.
