Abstract

The mass media inevitably contribute to the atmosphere within the family which fact, coupled with messages conveyed by the media, affects the family and its members in a unique way, as has been proven time and again. The family is subjected to a specific daily rhythm determined by the media and also to an influence which is reciprocal. In how far does it contribute to or detract from family dialogue, the purpose of which is to bring family members closer together? The author of this article advocates that the media are not an inhomogeneous foreign entity within the family, but rather play a role in the daily dynamics within the family. It is natural for man to strive for global communication, and in this respect the media should be considered a gift which makes possible a contribution to the quality of communication in general, but also within the family itself. However, the responsibility rests with the members of the family to determine how the media will influence dialogue between members, whether positively or negatively. The family itself is also a medium. An understanding of the media such as this should be able to satisfy the cognitive, axiological, communicative, ethical and cultural needs of the family and each of its members.
