Abstract

In addition to the basic biographical data on Dr. Antonio Felice Giacich (Lovran, 1813 - Rijeka, 1898), the article also describes the nineteenth-century medical environment in Rijeka which enabled him to make a distinguished professional career as a polyvalent practitioner and medical author, as seen from a respectable bibliography. Dr. Giacich earned his greatest merits in maritime medicine, and he could be regarded as its pioneer in the Habsburg Monarchy. After the International Congress in Paris in 1851, which was dedicated to maritime health issues, Dr. Giacich wrote the first maritime medical manual “Lezioni mediche per i naviganti” (Medical Lessons for Seafarers), later published in five editions.
