Abstract

This paper re-examines the fundamental characteristics of the media as the instrument or procedure of communicating the subject matter and as the powerful means of constructing social reality. It will try to clarify the basic possibilities of communication by the media on the interceptions of Eco’s approach to the theory of information, Saussure’s structural linguistics, Hjelmslev’s semiotics and Iser’s theoretical elaboration of the problem of fiction in literature. Also, combining the theoretical settings of these approaches, it will give the framework of structural-semiotic theory of media as a basis of cognition, construction of culture and social shaping of the image of the world. It will examine the epistemological reliability of the media, construction of the fictive and its part in the representation of reality and the role of ideology as intentional distortion of the code. Finally, it will disclose the fundamental semiotic paradoxes of fiction, media and auto subversion of semiotic cognitive acts.
