Abstract

This paper presents a brief history of the research conducted regarding one’s conception of one’s own body, and it provides definitions of the basic concepts involved. In a lack of a contemporary integral theory, which could adequately explain the structure and functions of the concept of the conception of one’s own body, the author presents seven integrative themes in this field: our conception of our own body reflects our perception, beliefs and emotions regarding the body and bodily experiences; it is multifaceted; the experiences of the conception of one’s own body are interlaced with emotions of one’s self; it is socially determined; it is not entirely static; it influences information processing and behaviour.
