Abstract
The aim of this paper is to define a theoretical model to stimulate intermodal transport in the Adriatic region in terms of sustainable development. A research has presented four basic activities (elements, factors), each solving the existing problems that complicate and slow the functioning and development of intermodal transport in the Adriatic region. In addition, the result shows that each of these activities of the presented model can be implemented independently in every country, but the full effect is achieved only when all the countries in the region are involved. The methodology which was used in forming the theoretic model has been designed on the basis of Logistic Freight Transport Action Plan (COM (2007) 607) by introducing information technology and quality management in intermodal transport system, initiating regional promotion and implementation of bottleneck exercise project. The results of the implementation of the presented model are: increase of the “modal shift” form road to sea, railways and inland waterways, positive environmental impact, creation of institutional and expert network and, finally, development or regional economy.
