Abstract

The relationship between civic equality and public recognition belongs to
one of the liveliest debates in contemporary political theory. Group concerns
and objectives put both liberalism and democracy to the test. Proponents of
politics of recognition assert that a mere liberal principle of tolerance is not
enough, nor is it sufficient for democratic society. Democratic justice requires
affirmative public acceptance of such identity. The paper examines the normative
status and theorethical relevance of liberal and democratic response, and
offers a very specific republican normative solution.
