Abstract

The paper presents evidence-based programmes developed and implemented in the USA and Western Europe in the work with families in their own environment. The programmes focus on children and young people engaged in risky behaviour, i.e. those with developed behavioural problems. The programmes consist of intensive help to the families based on the systemic theory, theory of social ecology, crisis intervention theory and social learning theory. The purpose of these intervention programmes is preventing out-of-home placement of children and young people at risk, empowering their families as well as contributing to improvements in family functioning and positive behaviour of children/young people. Since similar programmes do not exist in Croatia, the article stresses the importance of their introduction in the existing intervention framework of work with children and young people at risk and their families.
