Abstract

Digitalis has been in clinical use for more than 200 years and, as expected, its indication range has significantly narrowed over the time. The valid indications for the administration of digoxin, the only preparation of digitalis currently used, have been defined on the basis of the results of post-marketing studies, the most important of which is the DIG study. Therefore, digoxin may be used in patients with cardiac failure in sinus rhythm, where ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, diuretics and spironolactone have not achieved satisfactory effects. Beta blockers and calcium channel blockers are preferred in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation for the purpose of rate control. For drug conversion in patients with atrial fibrillation, preference should be given to amiodarone or propaphenone over digoxin.
