Abstract

Despite an enormous progress in cardiovascular medicine over the last fifty years, cardiovascular diseases remain the primary public health problem and the leading cause of death. Discovery of new medicines and new treatment options is an ongoing process. In 2009, over 300 new substances intended for cardiovascular therapy were the subject of research. This article discusses some medicines which are in clinical trials abroad, and which (or some of them) may be soon registered in Croatia as well. The article also speaks about the most frequent diseases and conditions, which are in the focus of pharmaceutical research interest and which require long-term use of medications. This primarily refers to acute coronary syndrome, permanent atrial fibrillation and acute cardiac failure.
