On the Revival of Ancient Music
Lucy Hallman Russell
; Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, National Geographic Expeditions Historian
Abstract
In this essay the author reflects on the universal and timeless appreciation of beauty and music since the Neolithic and Ancient Greek eras. In the 18th century attempts were made to revive music only 150 years old. Since the mid-20th century great strides in research, historical instruments and performing practices have been made, and these are now taught as pecialized subjects around the world. Mention of important historical performers and personal experiences in Croatia round out this contemplative commentary on the spread of Early Music.
