Abstract
The causes of perinatal deaths in Croatia are monitored according to Federation International of Gynecology
and Obstetrics (FIGO) and WHO’s recommendations, related to mother’s and child conditions which caused death. The
main cause in the fetus or infant and the main maternal condition with influence on death are coded according ICD-10.
Total perinatal mortality rate at 2008 in Croatia was 7,3‰: 6,1‰ due to perinatal causes and 1,2‰ due to congenital
malformations. Perinatal conditions participated in perinatal deaths with 83,3% and congenital malformations with
16,3%. Congenital malformations caused 4,9% stillbirths and 36,7% early neonatal deaths. Diseases/conditions originated
from perinatal period caused 95,1% of stillbirths and 63,3% of early neonatal deaths. In 87,1% of all stillborns and
in 77% of all early neonatal deaths the mother’s disease/condition or placenta/cord pathology has been established. The
most important complications connected with stillbirth were placental insufficiency and chorioamnionitis. Chorioamnionitis,
PPROM and multiple pregnancy complications were main mother’s conditions affecting the infant and caused
early neonatal death. Dual coding of perinatal death causes is important for perinatal care evaluation. Some of causes
could be prevented with improvement of antenatal visits and regional organisation of perinatal care.
